BIRKENSTOCK

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

To celebrate 250 years of shoemaking tradition, Birkenstock invited artists to reimagine some iconic imagery from BIRKENSTOCK’s past.

Simon Landrein dived into the colorful archives of Birkenstock and stumbled across a fun early 80’s newspaper advert. It seems, during that time at least, even nuns would favor the simplicity and comfort of a trusty good pair of Birkenstocks.

According to the artist himself, “I picked one with some nuns who seem to have fun, so I felt it would be nice to see them running with their legs out.”

Fun was the central theme that Simon stuck to throughout his process. He had fun getting involved and the nuns within his chosen image seemed to be having fun too.

When bringing everything together, Simon likes to keep things simple. He begins with a rough composition, he delicately cleans the lines and gives each shape its final form, and then he gets to colouring - where personality really starts to shine through.

Simon Landrein is a French illustrator and animator. He started to work as a 3D artist for studios such as Nexus and the Mill. For a few years his minimalist and irreverent style appeared in the New Yorker and NY Times.

Since then he’s been working for many editorial clients and translate his illustration into hot and absurd animations. Clients include The New Yorker, It’s Nice That, NYT, The Observer, Apple, Nike, Personal Magazin, Le Monde, and Rick and Morty.
